The capital city of the United Kingdom is the best destination for theatre enthusiasts in the whole wide world, being on the same level with the American Broadway. Every year, an impressive number of plays and musicals are staged in the illustrious theatres and entertainment venues in the legendary West End district, an area with a long history of ecstatic applauses from thrilled audiences. The vast majority of events that are held here feature flawless performances from some of the most popular and talented actors of today. Out of the huge range of London shows that are scheduled for this month, we have selected the five most anticipated theatre events. No matter what you do, you need to make sure that you don’t miss any of these staggering productions!
- Thriller Live
Thriller Live is a sensational musical that pays tribute to the astonishing career of the legendary pop superstar Michael Jackson. The show premiered in the West End in 2009 and was immediately crowned with success. Up to the present day, the production has been attended by more than 3 million spectators from 30 countries. The energetic and light-hearted dancers and singers skillfully re-enact Jackson’s fabulous dance moves, such as the Moonwalk. Fans of the pop king will be delighted by the score of the musical, which features many of Jackson’s top hits, like “Bad” or “Dirty Diana”. Throughout November, Thriller Live can be watched at the Lyric Theatre in the West End.
- Lazarus: The Musical
Lazarus: The Musical is one of the last projects completed by the iconic singer and songwriter David Bowie before he died. This highly surrealistic show inspired by Walter Tevis’ novel entitled “The Man Who Fell To Earth” tells the story of Thomas Newton, an alien who remains isolated and helpless on Earth. Once he encounters another lost soul, the depressed alien can finally begin to hope that he will be rescued. The musical premiered on Broadway on December 7 last year and was an instant hit, especially since it features many legendary hits of Bowie, like “Life on Mars” or “Heroes”. In November, Lazarus: The Musical will be staged at the Kings Cross Theatre.
- The Comedy About A Bank Robbery
The Comedy About A Bank Robbery is a hilarious comedy play that is bound to leave you crying with laughter when you see it. Staged for the first time on March 31 this year, the production is currently one of the hottest shows in the West End. The play showcases the hysterically funny events that take place after a diamond of immeasurable value is stored for safe keeping at the local bank in a town which is full of felons and scoundrels. During every day of November, The Comedy About A Bank Robbery is staged at the Criterion Theatre.
- The Play That Goes Wrong
The Play That Goes Wrong is another exhilarating production from Mischief Theatre, the same company that wrote The Comedy About A Bank Robbery. The show had its premiere in 2012 at the Old Red Lion Theatre in London. Both critics and spectators were delighted by the high-quality humour, and the play was distinguished with a Laurence Olivier Award. The story of this hilarious comedy shows a group of students at The Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society who don’t seem to be able to get past their sophomore year. In their hopeless struggle to graduate, they decide to act in a murder mystery play. In the end, everything goes utterly wrong, and the consequences are hilarious. This November, The Play That Goes Wrong will put a smile on the face of everyone who comes see it at the Duchess Theatre.
- The Book of Mormon
The Book of Mormon is a thrillingly amusing religious satire which premiered on the American Broadway in 2011. Delivered by none other than Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of the popular TV animation-comedy show South Park, this musical has had astronomical ticket sales in both the US and the UK and has been rewarded with 9 Tony Awards and one Grammy Award. The plot of The Book of Mormon focuses on two gullible Mormon missionaries who are striving to spread the word of God in a remote Ugandan settlement. As expected, they fail miserably. Those who want a big dose of humour can watch the musical in November at the Prince of Wales Theatre.
We honestly hope that these five theatre events that we described have caught your attention, as it would be a real shame if you didn’t see them. We strongly believe that for the time being these shows are the best that the West End of London has to offer. It is our firm conviction that every true theatre enthusiast should get to witness these huge and spectacular performances at least once. In case our article isn’t enough to convince you, feel free to look at some professional critic reviews, as they all speak very highly of these events. We are sure that you won’t be disappointed!
