Florence Pugh: Upcoming Movie Appearances For 2023 And Beyond

2022 was a good year of Florence Pugh.

“Don’t Worry Darling” reached a level of pop culture relevance that most arthouse films can only dream of, with film festival attendees and celebrity gossip addicts hanging on every detail of the rumored feud between Pugh and her director and co-star Olivia Wilde. But while the film’s reviews were mixed, nobody denied that Pugh gave a phenomenal performance in the lead role. Captivating industry observers while having the acting chops to justify the attention is the stuff that movie stars are made of.

Pugh won’t be leaving the limelight any time soon, as her upcoming film slate leaves her well positioned to capitalize on her current momentum. She’s currently working with directors ranging from Christopher Nolan to Denis Villeneuve, and will be seen everywhere from indie dramas to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“The Pack”

Whatever drama that may-or-may-not have happened on the “Don’t Worry Darling” set clearly didn’t sour Pugh on working with actors-turned-directors. She recently signed on to lead “The Pack,” a new psychological thriller that will be Alexander Skarsgård’s first feature film behind the camera. The movie, which is set to begin shooting in March 2023, follows a documentary crew who discover some dark secrets when they travel deep into the Alaskan wilderness in an attempt to save an endangered breed of wolves.

“Thunderbolts”

It was inevitable that a star with as much fame as Pugh would end up headlining a Marvel movie. The Oscar nominee made her MCU debut as Yelena Belova in “Black Widow” before reprising the role in three episodes of “Hawkeye.” But 2024’s “Thunderbolts” will put her front and center in the superhero spotlight. Jake Schreier is directing the ensemble film, which features a “Suicide Squad”-esque plot about a group of supervillains who are recruited to go on a mission for the government. Pugh will be flanked by an elite ensemble cast including Harrison Ford, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and David Harbour.

“Puss in Boots: The Last Wish”

Relased December 21 release, the Dreamworks Animation sequel and “Shrek” spinoff has a star-studded cast. Antonio Banderas returns to voice the titular Puss, along with Salma Hayek Pinault reprising her role of Kitty Softpaws. “What We Do in the Shadows” star Harvey Guillén makes his franchise debut as canine Perro. Pugh plays Goldilocks, Wagner Moura is the Big Bad Wolf, Mama Bear is voiced by Olivia Colman, and Ray Winstone is Papa Bear. Samson Kayo plays Baby Bear and John Mulaney is Jack Horner in the fantastical adventure film directed by Joel Crawford.

“The Wonder”

Emma Donoghue’s psychological thriller novel “The Wonder” is being adapted for Netflix. Donoghue’s other book, “Room,” landed Pugh’s fellow MCU staple Brie Larson an Academy Award nod.

Set in 1862, Pugh plays English nurse Lib Wright who is brought to a small Irish village to observe a girl said to have survived without food for month. However Lib soon finds herself fighting to save the child’s life as a journalist is also sent to cover the phenomenon. Per an official description, “The Wonder” is a “tale of two strangers who transform each other’s lives, a psychological thriller, and a story of love pitted against evil.”

Ciarán Hinds, Toby Jones, Niamh Algar, and Elaine Cassidy also star. “Gloria Bell” and “A Fantastic Woman” director Sebastián Lelio helms the film and co-wrote the script along with “Conversations with Friends” and “Normal People” scribe Alice Birch.

“A Good Person”

Zach Braff writes, directs, and produces the New Jersey-set drama slated for a March 24, 2023 release. Pugh plays Allison, a woman who survives a fatal accident and forms an unlikely relationship with her would-be father-in-law, portrayed by Morgan Freeman. Molly Shannon, Celeste O’Connor, Zoe Lister-Jones, and Chinaza Uche round out the cast. Pugh also makes her producing debut with the film, which serves as a reunion for Freeman and director Braff after 2017’s “Going in Style.”

“Oppenheimer”

Who isn’t in “Oppenheimer”?! Christopher Nolan’s latest historical drama boasts a massive ensemble cast led by Cillian Murphy who plays the titular scientist Robert J. Oppenheimer, known as the father of the atomic bomb. Emily Blunt stars as Oppenheimer’s wife, biologist and botanist Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer, with Matt Damon portraying General Leslie Groves Jr., director of the Manhattan Project, and Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, a founding commissioner of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. Pugh plays psychiatrist Jean Tatlock, Benny Safdie is theoretical physicist Edward Teller, Michael Angarano takes on Robert Serber, and Josh Hartnett plays pioneering American nuclear scientist Ernest Lawrence.

“Oppenheimer” is Nolan’s first film with Universal Pictures after his Warner Bros. falling out over the pandemic release of “Tenet,” which saw a shortened theatrical window in favor of HBO Max play. The film is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer,” by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. “Oppenheimer” is slated for a July 21, 2023, theatrical release.

“Dune: Part Two”

Pugh signed on to Denis Villeneuve’s epic “Dune” sequel to play Princess Irulan Corrino opposite returning stars Zendaya, Timothée Chalamet, and Javier Bardem. Christopher Walken, Austin Butler, and Léa Seydoux are among the fresh faces to the sci-fi franchise; “Dune: Part Two” is scheduled for an October 20, 2023 release.

“It’s like a chess game,” director Villeneuve previously said. “Some new characters will be introduced in the second part, and a decision I made very early on was that this first part would be more about Paul Atreides and the Bene Gesserit, and his experience of being in contact for the first time with a different culture. Second part, there will be much more Harkonnen stuff.”

“The Maid”

Pugh is producing a feature adaptation of Nita Prose’s novel “The Maid” about a hotel housekeeper who struggles with social anxiety. Pugh will also star in the lead role of Molly, whose life is upended after she finds a hotel guest dead in his room. Molly soon becomes the primary suspect due to her quirky demeanor, but it’s up to her to solve the case and clear her name. Drawing parallels to “Clue,” the novel is a bestseller.

“East of Eden”

Zoe Kazan is writing and executive producing an adaptation of John Steinbeck’s “East of Eden” for an upcoming Netflix limited series, starring Pugh as antiheroine Cathy Ames. Kazan’s grandfather Elia Kazan famously brought the novel to the big screen in 1955, with James Dean in a star-making role. The part of Cathy Ames was portrayed by Jo Van Fleet, who earned a Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Jane Seymour later took on the role for an ABC miniseries adaptation in 1982 and received a Best Actress Golden Globe.

“More than anything, I have wanted to give full expression to the novel’s astonishing, singular antiheroine, Cathy Ames,” Kazan said in a press statement. “Florence Pugh is our dream Cathy; I can’t imagine a more thrilling actor to bring this character to life.
