Stop press: Harry has a new hairstyle! Yes, for his latest role as Igor in the upcoming Frankenstein movie, Daniel Radcliffe is sporting some new locks. But the latest do is less Harry and more Sirius Black, with the young star admitting to fans, “I look like a young Charles Manson.”

For a comprehensive look at Harry’s hair over time, why not revive a few memories on the Harry Potter Studio Tour at the Warner Brother’s studios in London. Daniel’s new do was first released upon the world at this year’s WhatsOnStage Awards, where he won the Best Actor prize for his lead role in the Martin McDonagh play, The Cripple of Inishman. The play moves to Broadway in April, so the Irish undercut is predicted to make a return to Radcliffe’s bonce after filming for the Frankentstein movie is complete.

For now, a thick mop of bedraggled shoulder-length hair hides the once innocent face we’ve come to know and love. But instead of growing his own like a true method actor, Radcliffe has opted for extensions instead. Unconfirmed reports suggest that the anonymous donor of the hair is vying for Best Supporting role at next year’s Oscars.

His current hair maintenance regime has provoked a new-found affinity with his female audience. “I do have a whole new sympathy for women,” he said in an interview. However, the fragile extensions sadly render a Croydon facelift out of the question. And we’re likely never to see an Orlando Bloom either, as Radcliffe admits that this is “not a permanent change.”

Over the years we’ve witnessed the subtle evolution of our hero’s barnet. From the preppy bowl of The Philiosopher’s Stone, right up to this latest abomination, Radcliffe has had to adopt a number of different looks to suit his roles. We’ve had the slightly embarrassing, breezy centre parting in The Half Blood Prince, and the sleek comb over of The Order of the Phoenix.

More recent roles have shown the true acting capability of Radcliffe’s curls. We’ve seen a huge, period side parting in The Woman in Black, and some impressively authentic 50s Jewish curls in the Allan Ginsberg biopic, Kill Your Darlings. Whatever the role, Radcliffe’s hair proves always to be more than capable of playing the part. But our Daniel is still a little reticent about the maintenance that goes into his new style. “I don’t mind how it looks, but I mind dealing with it. I don’t know why any man would have it voluntarily.”. “The amount of work it takes, having to dry it – doing anything to it is a ******* nightmare.”

Thankfully, Radcliffe is now stepping out of Harry’s shoes and establishing himself as a versatile act rather than a one trick pony. Escaping his child actor stereotype is surely at least partly to do with some compelling performances from his hair. Here’s to the future of Daniel Radcliffe’s hair; maybe he’ll play Gandalf one day…
