Britney Spears is the true definition of a classic music superstar, and rightfully so. Throughout her long, decades-lasting career from the late 1990s, the Princess of Pop is responsible for some of the most iconic pop culture moments, including her Baby One More Time and Oops, I Did It Again albums. They later became some of the best-selling records of all time, and her career continued to blossom as the former teeny-bopping pop hit machine ventured into adulthood.
However, there’s still so much to be said about Britney’s artistry than just her music. In addition to her impressive portfolio in singing, Britney is also an actor – her debut full-feature film, Crossroads, was a hot mess commercially, but critics praised her on-screen charisma and skills. To sum it up, here’s a timeline of Britney Spears’ acting career, and what’s in the next saga of the superstar’s career.
8/8 1993-1994: Britney Spears Starred In The Last Two Seasons Of ‘The Mickey Mouse Club’
Before making it big, Britney Spears was a part of the 1990s revival of The Mickey Mouse Club. She landed an audition when she was 8, and although the producers hesitated from casting her due to her age, she ended up landing the role, in which she starred alongside young Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, Ryan Gosling, and Keri Russell until its cancellation in 1994.
When asked about whether she’d be down if there was an MMC reunion, the singer said in a 2018 interview, “I would definitely show up. I would go. Definitely.”
7/8 In 2001’s Longshot, Britney Spears Starred As A Flight Attendant
In 2001, Britney made her film debut in Longshot, under quite limited screen time as a flight attendant. The film, however, was a lackluster project and a promo tool for Lou Pearlman’s girlbands and boybands including Britney, NSYNC, Innosense, LFO, O-Town, and more. It centers around the life of a young man who gets caught up in his brother’s gigolo activity and uses real-life pop stars as tools.
6/8 2002: Britney Spears Landed Her Debut Role In ‘Crossroads’
A year later, the singer starred in Crossroads, her lead character debut alongside Zoe Saldaña and Taryn Manning. The Tamra Davis-directed teen drama centers around three best friends as they navigate through their friendship during a cross-country road trip. It was a box office success with over $60 million generated worldwide but fell short among critics except for Britney’s acting.
“Honestly, this is my dream come true. I can’t believe this is happening right now. I can’t believe I even have a movie. So I feel very blessed to be where I am right now,” she recalled in an interview with Hollywood.
5/8 Britney Spears Did Voice Acting In The American Dub Of ‘Robbie The Reindeer’…
Around the same years, Britney provided the voice works for the American dub of Robbie the Reindeer‘s BBC TV specials Hooves of Fire (1999) and Legend of the Lost Tribe (2002).
Her character, Donner, is a young female reindeer with a secret attraction to the son of the lead reindeer. Ben Stiller, Leah Remini, High Grant, Dick Enberg, and Dan Dierdorf voiced their respective characters alongside the singer.
4/8 … And Britney Spears Had A Cameo Appearance In The Simpsons
Britney appeared for another voice-over work in “The Mansion Family,” the 12th episode of the 11th season of The Simpsons. The singer portrays the fictionalized version of herself as the host of an award ceremony at the annual Springfield Pride Awards to honor 108-year-old Cornelius before her kiss on the cheek gave him a heart attack.
“She was a lot of fun to work with. She was a fan of the show, and she was willing to do all the lines. It was all the people around her that were crazy, the management and all that,” said executive producer Mike Scully.
3/8 2006: Britney Spears Joined Will & Grace As Amber-Louise
It wasn’t until 2006 when Britney made her TV return in the long-running sitcom Will & Grace. In the episode “Buy, Buy Baby” from the show’s eighth season, Britney stars as Amber-Louise, the new co-host of the lead character’s OutTV gay television network.
“I think anybody in their right mind, any celebrity would want to be a part of that,” Britney said of her primetime cameo, in an interview. “It’s just hilarious, and I think all the secrets that get shown through the show, it’s hilarious.”
2/8 2008: Britney Spears Was In How I Met Your Mother
In another memorable cameo, Britney Spears starred in two episodes of How I Met Your Mother in its third season in 2008, alongside Enrique Iglesias. In these two episodes, Britney became Abby, Stella’s receptionist who vows to sabotage Barney’s relationship.
“Working at ‘How I Met Your Mother’ has been so terrific,” she told The ShowBuzz. “Everyone, including the cast, the crew and the producers, has been wonderful and Abby is such a fun girl to play. I’m having a blast!”
1/8 What’s Next For The Super Star?
So, what’s next in Britney Spears’ career? Her latest horror comedy film appearance, Corporate Animals, was released back in 2019 in which she gave her voice in a secret cameo as a ghost of herself, and she hasn’t starred in any big release since then.
However, things are starting to look bright for the singer as her conservatorship ended. This summer, she linked up with veteran singer Elton John for a career-defining collaboration, “Hold Me Closer,” which became her first-ever top-10 song since “Scream and Shout” in 2012!
