American singer-songwriter Mary J. Blige has admitted in a new interview that she would have been a hairdresser if she wasn’t famous.
The 42-year-old singer admits she would have pursued a career in a hair salon if she hadn’t become successful within the music field because she was good at styling hair when she was a youngster.
She said: ”If this hadn’t happened to me, I liked doing hair a lot when I was young. I was the hairstylist for my friends and my neighbours and I was good at it.”
The ‘No More Drama’ hitmaker is adamant money wasn’t her motivation for fame, but she admits a steady flow of cash is vital while living in society today.
She explained to The Times: ”Money important while we’re here on Earth, but really my motivation is the fans. When they come up and say, ‘You helped me get out of a bad relationship’, or, ‘You saved my life’ – those are the reasons I keep going.”
Despite her star status, however, Mary insists she doesn’t want her fans to see her as an A-list star.
She said: ”I don’t want people to look up to me. I want people to relate to me.”
MarkMeets have also heard that ‘The Journey Singer’ Mary J. Blige used drugs and alcohol to numb the pain of her personal life at the beginning of her career, revealing she was “spinning” out of control.
“Early on, I don’t remember what was going on … I was just there singing. Everything was wrong. There was no support; I was a deer in the headlights. I was just spinning and trying to survive.
“That included everything – alcohol, drugs, anything to keep myself numb from seeing what the truth was, which is nobody cared.”
