The Witcher season 3: Henry Cavill to have ‘heroic send-off’ amid exit

‘The Witcher’ Season 3: Everything to Know

In October this year, it was announced that the actor had quit the Netflix fantasy series, with Liam Hemsworth replacing him as Geralt of Rivia from season 4.

While fans are gutted to see Henry go amid the news that he also won’t be returning as Superman in the DC cinematic universe, the 39-year-old shared last week that he’s embarking on a passion project of bringing the world of Warhammer to life on screen as a lead star and executive producer.

Ahead of Henry’s last season of  the TV adaptation’s creator Lauren S Hissrich revealed some details about how his final outing will play out.

‘Henry has given so much to the show and so we want to honour that appropriately,’.

She explained that the third season is ‘the closest thing that we’ve done as a one-to-one adaptation of the books’, outlining how the fourth book in Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher series, formed some of the inspiration for the new episodes.

The Witcher showrunner has vowed that Henry Cavill will have a ‘heroic send-off’ in season 3 as fans continue to try to wrap their heads around his unexpected exit.

Addressing the narrative surrounding monster hunter Geralt, Lauren continued: ‘Geralt’s big turn is about giving up neutrality and doing anything that he has to do to get to Ciri [Freya Allan]. And to me, it’s the most heroic send-off that we could have, even though it wasn’t written to be that.

‘Geralt has a new mission in mind when we come back to him in season 4. He’s a slightly different Geralt than we expected. Now, by the way, that’s an understatement.’

At the recent premiere for the prequel series The Witcher: Blood Origin in London, Joey Batey – who made his debut as the bard Jaskier in the original show – shared his upset reaction to Henry’s departure.

‘I was very sad. I mean, I’m not gonna lie. It was a little gutting because Henry just brings the show,’ the 33-year-old said.

‘He has had this show on his shoulders for four years now and brings this strength on the bad days, and the joy on the good ones. So he will be really missed. I’ll miss him, like nobody’s business.’

However, he also expressed his excitement over Liam’s portrayal of Geralt, stating: ‘I’ve been talking to Liam and Liam’s so keen and is already throwing himself into every little corner of this world and this universe.’

What is The Witcher season 3 about?

icking off where season 2 left off, Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri are all back together again after taking down the demon Voleith Meir. However, the majority of the Continent is now in pursuit of Ciri.

The show released season 3’s official synopsis in April 2022 on Twitter, which reads: “As monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it. Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl’s untapped powers; instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line — or risk losing each other forever.”

Who is in the cast?

In addition to Cavill, many of the show’s cast members will be reprising their roles during season 3. We can expect Chalotra to return as the powerful sorceress Yennefer, as well as Freya Allan as Princess Cirilla. Other series regulars, including Joey Batey, MyAnna Buring, Anna Shaffer and Kim Bodnia, will also make appearances.

On April 14, 2022, the show announced four new cast members and characters on Twitter. Robbie Ammel will be playing Gallatin, the leader of a guerrilla Scoia’tael army; Shang-Chi‘s Meng’er Zhang is Milva, a human adopted by the dryads of Brokilon Forest; Hugh Skinner is set to play Prince Radovid, a royal playboy; and Christelle Elwin is Mistle, a member of a group of misfit teenagers who steal from the rich.

Season 3 of The Witcher will be largely based on Sapkowski’s second book, The Time of Contempt, which is one of the most action-packed books of the series.

In his statement announcing he was stepping down from the show, Henry wrote: ‘As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men.’

Paying homage to his successor Liam, he added: ‘Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.’

Why Henry Cavill Is No Longer Superman. Cavill, sources say, did not have a deal in place to return as Superman, only a verbal agreement that the studio would develop future projects.

Season 3 of The Witcher will be coming during summer 2023.
