How are the Olivier Award winners chosen?

The Society of London Theatre puts together four panels of people to choose the awards. The four panels are for theatre, opera, dance and affiliates.

What shows are eligible for a 2022 Olivier Award?

That’s a good question, and the answer is – a lot of shows! Because the Awards were cancelled last year, this year’s awards are selecting shows that opened between 19 February 2020 to 22 February 2022 – two years of shows, albeit with a vastly reduced number in 2020 and 2021 because of Covid. The show has to have played in a theatre represented in membership of Society of London Theatre to be considered eligible, but that basically covers most West End theatres.

Who organises the Olivier Awards?

Ultimately, Society of London Theatre chief executive Julian Bird is responsible for the awards. It is his last year as exec producer of the awards as he leaves SOLT in May. So expect him to want these awards – the first proper big, live ceremony for two years – to be MEGA!
