Petrol Jeep Avenger Arriving in the UK, Followed by Hybrid Variant

Jeep is set to introduce petrol versions of the Avenger in the UK, starting at a price of £27,000, with availability expected in early the next year. These petrol variants will exclusively feature a manual gearbox.

Initially, the petrol Avenger was planned for sale exclusively in Italy, Poland, and Spain due to the limited electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure in those markets. However, the UK market has shown significant interest, prompting the decision to make it available in the United Kingdom as well.

Jeep’s UK product chief, Paul Rush, confirmed the expansion of availability to the UK market, citing the strong demand for internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. Approximately 80% of Jeep’s sales are currently comprised of pure-ICE vehicles.

“Their [European bosses] asked us to take some. It was a no-brainer to say yes,” Rush stated. When questioned about the potential quantity, Rush indicated that it would likely be no more than “a couple thousand” units in total.

The petrol-powered Avenger is equipped with a turbocharged three-cylinder 1.2-liter Puretech engine, similar to what is found in several other vehicles under the Stellantis umbrella, including the Vauxhall Corsa, Peugeot 308, and Citroën C3 Aircross. This compact crossover will be offered exclusively in mid-range Altitude trim, with limited customization options available, primarily related to the choice of paint color.

Details on the mild hybrid variant are somewhat limited, but it is expected to be priced around £30,000 and feature the same 1.2 Puretech 48V powertrain used in the Peugeot 3008. This setup pairs a petrol engine with a 28bhp electric motor integrated into a six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The mild hybrid is anticipated to be available in a single trim level with few additional options.

Jeep is clearly prioritizing the Avenger as an electric vehicle (EV) and does not plan to heavily market the petrol or hybrid versions. However, Jules Tilstone, the UK boss for Jeep, expressed optimism about the introduction of ICE cars, highlighting their visibility on the road as a form of advertising.

This move by Jeep follows a similar U-turn made by fellow Stellantis brand Citroën, which initially intended to offer the C4 X exclusively with electric power in the UK but later decided to include ICE options due to market demand.
