Lightyear trailer excites Toy Story fans

First glimpse of Buzz spin-off movie from Pixar

Toy Story fans have had their appetites whetted by the appearance of the first trailer for the new Buzz Lightyear film, titled Lightyear, which will be released in cinemas next summer.

The spin-off from the hugely successful film franchise, sees Captain America’s Chris Evans, rather than Tim Allen, provide the voice for the space ranger as he goes “to infinity and beyond” in the new Pixar animated movie.

Pixar has released the first teaser trailer for its new Toy Story spin-off, which delves into the backstory of Buzz Lightyear.

Lightyear – which was first announced by Pixar at Disney’s Investor Day in 2020 – is scheduled to debut in cinemas on June 17th 2022.

The new film, simply titled Lightyear, is scheduled for release next year. It’ll focus on how Buzz became captain of the Space Rangers’ Universe Protection Unit – doing battle against Zurg, the villainous evil emperor.

In the original Toy Story movie, Buzz Lightyear wrongly thinks he’s an actual Space Ranger, rather than just a toy version of one. The new spin-off tells the story of the ‘real’ Buzz Lightyear, who supposedly inspired the merchandise.

While Toy Story features the kids’ toy version of Buzz, the new feature will star the “real-life” hero who inspired the character in the franchise.

The trailer, set to David Bowie’s epic Starman, sees Buzz suiting up before blasting off into the stars in his space rocket.
It also includes a shot of the hero looking at his famous green-and-white space suit.

Sharing the trailer online, US actor Evans, 40, thanked director Angus MacLane and wrote animated films “were an enormous part of my childhood”.

In the new Buzz Lightyear spin-off film, Chris Evans takes over as the voice of the title character – replacing Tim Allen, who’s voiced the toy version of Buzz in all four Toy Story movies so far.

On Twitter, Evans expressed his gratitude at being able to take on the much-loved character, describing the original Toy Story films as “an enormous part of my childhood”.

However, the studio is currently keeping other cast details under wraps, so we don’t yet know who’ll be starring alongside Evans.

Angus MacLane, previously an animator and story artist at Pixar, makes his full-length directorial debut with Lightyear.
