The Debut brings Jesse Eisenberg, Julianne Moore and a story of theatrical ambition to the closing night of the BFI London Film Festival 2026. The film’s UK premiere takes place at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday 18 October, ahead of its UK cinema release on 15 January 2027. Eisenberg and members of the cast are expected to attend, although individual appearances remain subject to confirmation.
For audiences deciding whether to book, there are several ways to see the film: the London gala, participating cinemas around the UK and its wider theatrical release next year.
MarkMeets’ London film premieres calendar covers more forthcoming red carpet events across the capital.

What is The Debut about?
The Debut follows Mona, a woman whose family life has left little room for her own ambitions. An impulsive audition for a local musical offers an unexpected opportunity to step into the spotlight.
That opportunity comes with Jerry, a demanding theatre director whose methods push her increasingly far. As rehearsals take over, Mona’s commitment to her character becomes much more than an evening hobby.
Julianne Moore plays Mona, with Paul Giamatti as Jerry. Eisenberg writes and directs the film, and also wrote songs for the musical within it. The BFI’s programme describes a comedy-drama about finding a new identity through performance.
The premise gives the film an appealing tension: when does discovering a passion become losing yourself in it? A local production might seem a modest setting, but for someone finally being noticed, the stakes can feel enormous.
The Debut cast: who stars alongside Julianne Moore?
The announced ensemble includes:
- Julianne Moore
- Paul Giamatti
- Halle Bailey
- Jesse Eisenberg
- Havana Rose Liu
- Bernadette Peters
- Colton Ryan
- Lilli Cooper
- Maulik Pancholy
- Bonnie Milligan
The BFI’s screening credits also list Cara Buono. These are cast credits rather than a confirmed red carpet guest list.
That distinction matters for fans making travel plans. A performer appearing in the film does not automatically mean they will attend its London premiere.
Jesse Eisenberg returns to the London Film Festival
The Debut continues Eisenberg’s work behind the camera following When You Finish Saving the World and A Real Pain. The latter screened at the London Film Festival in 2024, making this closing gala a return to the event.
His progression from actor to writer-director is part of the interest here. Rather than building this story around a professional star, he puts a newcomer to performance at its centre.
There is also a neat connection between the festival’s opening and closing selections. The 2026 edition opened with Elsinore, about actor Ian Charleson, and closes with another film concerned with theatre and the people drawn towards it.

The Debut Closing Night Gala: date and venue
The UK premiere takes place at Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre, on Sunday 18 October 2026. It closes the festival’s 70th edition, which runs from 7 to 18 October.
This is a South Bank event, so fans should plan around the venue named on their booking. Leicester Square premiere arrangements should not be assumed to apply.

What do the £250 fundraising tickets include?
The BFI advertised fundraising tickets at £250, including a red carpet walk and admission to the premiere, with proceeds supporting its charitable work.
Its terms exclude pre-screening and post-screening events, as well as red carpet photography access. Tickets are non-refundable and non-exchangeable, with a maximum of four per person. Check availability and the current terms on the official BFI fundraising ticket page before booking.
The £250 offer is a particular fundraising package. It should not be treated as the price of every screening of The Debut.
Where can you see The Debut outside London?
The BFI confirms that The Debut is also screening at cinemas around the UK during the festival. Its official film listing links to participating venues, allowing audiences outside London to check local arrangements.
Check the individual cinema’s listing for the screening time and exactly what the presentation includes. A regional screening ticket should not be assumed to include an in-person cast appearance.
When is The Debut released in UK cinemas?
The Debut opens in UK cinemas on 15 January 2027 through Lionsgate. The October festival screenings offer an earlier opportunity to watch it.
The Debut: frequently asked questions
