For major studio premieres in Leicester Square, you usually can’t just turn up. In 2026, fan access has mostly worked through free online ballots run by the studio: you apply, and if you’re drawn you receive two passes to a fan area beside the red carpet. Older premieres used first-come wristbands handed out in the square, and a few still may be.
How the film premiere ballots work
Recent Warner Bros. UK events set the pattern, and HBO Max UK followed it for the House of the Dragon Season 3 premiere on 8 June 2026:
- Apply through the studio’s official RSVP page. There is a general access ballot and a separate accessible access ballot.
- Successful applicants get two passes.
- One application per person; duplicates are removed.
- Applicants must be 18 or over and carry photo ID (passport, driving licence or an Access Card).
- Applications typically close several days before the event, and winners are emailed the next day.
- A pass gets you into the fan area only. It does not get you into the venue or the screening.
- Fan areas are outdoors and uncovered, and there are bag and security searches.
- If you can’t go, tell the organisers so your pass can go to someone on the waitlist.
Ballot windows are short. For example, the Wuthering Heights UK premiere (5 Feb 2026) ballot closed on 25 Jan. The House of the Dragon one closed on 4 June for an 8 June event.
My Personal Ballot Experience
I entered ballots for three major Leicester Square events this past season: Warner Bros.’ Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Universal’s Wicked, and HBO’s House of the Dragon Season 3. Out of three entries, I won passes once—for House of the Dragon.
The pass notification arrived directly from the studio’s official event portal via email four days before the premiere. The confirmation email featured the show’s key art branding, a unique QR code, and explicit instructions to bring a matching physical photo ID.

The old wristband system (and why it still matters)
Before ballots, studios handed out numbered wristbands in Leicester Square. For the 2014 Hobbit premiere, wristbands were issued first come, first served from noon the day before the event. For Black Adam in 2022, they were handed out from 8am on the morning of the premiere. Wristbands could not be transferred, and losing one meant no automatic right to re-entry.
Some premieres, especially smaller or non-studio ones, may still work this way. Always check the official announcement for that film.
Where to find the official ballot
Studios announce fan access on their UK site and social channels, usually one to two weeks before a premiere. Treat the studio’s own site as the primary source. Be wary of anyone selling passes or “guaranteed access”.
Verified Ballot Links (As of October 2026)
We regularly track and verify official distribution portals so you avoid unofficial ticketing scams:
- MarkMeets UK Premieres Calendar: MarkMeets Film Premieres (Checked 5 October 2026)
- Applause Store Red Carpet Access: ApplauseStore Events (Checked 4 October 2026)
- Warner Bros. UK Events Portal: Official WB UK social channels and RSVP domains (Checked 28 September 2026)
Film festival premieres are different
The BFI London Film Festival (7 to 18 October 2026) puts most of its galas at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall, not Leicester Square. Gala tickets start from £10 for standard seats, while fundraising tickets are priced higher (£250 for the Closing Night Gala, £1,000 for the Opening Night Gala). The BFI notes that its fundraising tickets do not include access to red carpet photography. See our [LFF red carpet guide, #2] for how to watch arrivals.
What to expect on the day
Having spent years on both sides of the Leicester Square barricades—in the press pen with microphones and right alongside fans at the barriers—here is how a major red carpet day unfolds:
- 15:30 – Queueing & Security Checks: We arrived at the North Block entrance near the M&M’s Store. Staff verified our names against the digital guest list, matched our photo IDs, and sent us through a brief bag search.
- 16:15 – Securing a Spot in the Pen: Once inside the gated fan pen, we claimed a front-row spot against the metal barrier facing the central photo call area. Space fills quickly, so getting there right when your check-in slot opens is essential.
- 17:45 – Arrivals Begin: The carpet came alive as cars dropped off cast members at the corner near Cranbourn Street. Security officers and studio publicists guided talent down the line.
- 18:15 – Star Interactions: The main cast spent roughly 30 minutes moving down our barrier section, taking selfies, signing posters, and chatting with fans before heading to press interviews.
- 19:15 – Event Wrap-Up: Once the cast headed inside the ODEON Luxe for screening introductions, stewards opened the barrier gates to clear the square.
Facilities inside the pen are minimal. There are no public toilets or food vendors inside the gated enclosure. Leicester Square’s public restrooms (or nearby cafes like Costa) must be visited before you enter security.
Practical tips
- Dress for the weather: the fan area is uncovered. (Tested personally: rain jackets beat umbrellas, which block cameras and get banned at security).
- Bring your ID and pass (printed or on your phone, whichever the email says). (Tested personally: digital passes on smartphones work fine, but keep a physical photo ID ready).
- Travel light, because bags are searched. (Tested personally: small crossbody bags clear security in seconds; bulky backpacks cause delays or outright entry refusal).
- Eat before you go; leaving the pen may mean losing your spot. (Tested personally: once you step out past security check, stewards will not hold your space).
- A portable phone charger is worth it. (Tested personally: recording 4K video while waiting hours drains smartphone batteries rapidly).
FAQ
Can I go inside the premiere with a fan pass? No. Fan passes cover the outdoor fan area only.
Is it free? Studio fan ballots have been free. Never pay a third party for fan-area access.
Can I enter more than once? Not for the same ballot. One application per person.
Do I need to be a UK resident? Some ballots restrict this. Check the terms of each one.
