The 70th BFI London Film Festival (LFF) runs from 7 to 18 October 2026. This guide covers where the red carpets are, what tickets cost, and what’s free. The festival opens tonight, so check the BFI’s site for the latest on any individual event.
LFF is not at Leicester Square
Most people searching for London premieres expect Leicester Square. LFF is different. Its gala premieres are held at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall, with the red carpets set up beside the River Thames. Other screenings take place at BFI Southbank and cinemas across central London. The BFI lists the Prince Charles Cinema, Vue West End and Curzon Soho among the wider venues.
According to the BFI’s own procurement notice, the festival hosts between 22 and 26 red carpet premieres over its 12 days, with UK, European and world premieres and on-stage introductions from talent.
See BFI London Film Premiere Calendar October 2026 for dates.
The headline dates
| Date | Gala | Notes |

What tickets cost
- Standard gala tickets: from £10 plus a £1 booking fee, with £6 tickets for BFI 25 and Under. Members and Patrons pay no booking fee.
- Opening Night fundraising ticket: £1,000, including a red carpet arrival and an exclusive reception.
- Closing Night fundraising ticket: £250, including the red carpet walk.
Importantly, the BFI says fundraising tickets do not include access to any red carpet photography.
Gala seats at the most in-demand screenings may already be sold out. Check the BFI’s What’s On page for current availability.
Can you watch arrivals without a ticket?
We couldn’t find an official BFI statement setting out a public viewing area. One third-party festival guide says the public can stand at designated barriers outside the Royal Festival Hall to watch arrivals, but it’s a travel-concierge site and not an official source.
Our advice: check the BFI’s festival pages or social channels on the day, and don’t pay anyone for “guaranteed” viewing access. See premiere ticket and ballot scams.
Free events
The festival runs a free programme called LFF for Free, with talks, workshops and Q&As, including at BFI Southbank. Free family events and drop-in activities are also listed on the festival’s pages. Entry to a film still needs a ticket.
Getting there
The Royal Festival Hall and BFI Southbank are both near Waterloo and Embankment stations.
Compare with Leicester Square premieres
If you’re after a studio blockbuster premiere, those are a different system, usually with free fan ballots. See our Leicester Square premiere calendar and fan access guide.
