Daniel Craig is best known for his role as James Bond, having starred in fivefilms as the iconic British spy: “Casino Royale” (2006), “Quantum of Solace” (2008), “Skyfall” (2012), “Spectre” (2015), and “No Time To Die” (2021). However, the actor has also appeared in several other popular movies outside of the Bond franchise. Here are some of those films, with brief summaries and reviews:
“Layer Cake” (2004) – Craig stars as a successful cocaine dealer in London who wants to retire but becomes embroiled in a dangerous situation when he is asked to find a missing person. Review: 8/10
“Munich” (2005) – Craig plays one of a group of Mossad agents who are tasked with assassinating the Palestinian terrorists responsible for the massacre of 11 Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympics. Review: 7/10
“Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery“” A deliciously twisty remix of the classic British-style murder mystery, with a fabulous location and a group of suspects who all have motive and opportunity. Review 8/10. The sequel was – A lighter, brighter sequel but with the same social conscience
“Defiance” (2008) – Craig stars as Tuvia Bielski, the leader of a group of Jewish partisans who evade the Nazis and fight back against them during World War II. Review: 8/10
“Road to Perdition” (2002) One of Craig’s earliest forays into Hollywood, playing a small but key role in Sam Mendes’s retro gangster thriller, adapted from a graphic novel by Max Allan Collins and Richard Piers Rayner. It’s very much the bad guy part: Craig is Connor, the twitchy, murderous son of Paul Newman’s gang boss John Rooney. Sample dialogue: he’s asked at a wake why he’s always smiling; Connor replies, grinning maliciously: “Because it’s all so fucking hilarious.” Review 7/10
“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” (2011) – Craig plays investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist, who is hired by a wealthy Swedish family to solve a decades-old murder. Along the way, he teams up with computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (played by Rooney Mara). Review: 9/10
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” (2015) – Craig makes a cameo appearance as a Stormtrooper in the seventh installment of the “Star Wars” franchise. Review: 8/10
