Top 10 Classic Rock Songs of All Time

Bohemian Rhapsody

Bohemian Rhapsody is one of Queen’s most well-known songs—if not their most well-known song. Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of Queen, wrote the song. It came out on Queen’s 1975 album that went by the name of A Night At The Opera. The song is about six minutes long and it consists of an intro, a ballad, an operatic section, a hard rock section and a coda that is reflective. There are no chorus parts in the song.

Born To Be Wild

Born To Be Wild was written by Mars Bonfire and played by the band Steppenwolf. It came out on the band’s 1968 album, Everyone’s Next One. Prior to being called Steppenwolf, the band was called The Sparrow. Before their name changed to Steppenwolf, Mars Bonfire had left the band. Many people consider Born to Be Wild to be the first heavy metal song. Born To Be Wild is usually associated with images of bikers and counterculture. The movie Easy Rider uses the song in it’s intro as Wyatt (played by Peter Fonda) and Billy (played by Dennis Hopper), are riding their motorcycles on a landscape in the American West.

Incense And Peppermints

Incense And Peppermints was written by a psychedelic, rock band based in Los Angeles called Strawberry Alarm Clock. It came out on the band’s debut album on November 15th, 1967. The album was called Incense and Peppermints. The song has a trippy, 1960’s counterculture feel to it and talks about the general dynamics of society. For the week ending November 25th, 1967, it was #1 on the Billboard chart.

Stairway To Heaven

Stairway To Heaven was written by vocalist Robert Plant and guitarist Jimmy Page. It came out in 1971 on Led Zeppelin’s untitled fourth studio album. The song is about eight minutes long and consists of three parts. Each successive part becomes quicker in tempo, harder and more electrified. Unfortunately, sometimes the pretty, catchy melody this song is used in the context of being royalty free background music, even though it isn’t.

All Along The Watchtower

All Along The Watchtower was originally written by Bob Dylan. It ended up on his album John Wesley Harding, which came out in 1967. Various other artists have covered All Along The Watchtower. Sunny Afternoon

The man has a stressful conflict with his girlfriend, though he is currently enjoying the sunny afternoon.

White Room

The lyrics to White Room were written by poet Pete Brown. The song was composed by bassist Jack Bruce and played by the band Cream. The song came out on Cream’s 1968 album, Those Were The Days. It also came out on singles in America and the UK that were released in 1969.

Paint It Black

Paint It Black was written by Keith Richards and Mick Jagger. It came out on the Rolling Stones album Aftermath in 1966. It is about the sadness of losing a partner, spouse or lover. The album that it was released on was called Dreamboat Annie. Magic Man is about a young woman who is in the process of being seduced by a charismatic man. Meanwhile her mother is overprotective of her.

I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll

I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll was originally written by Alan Merill of the Arrows in 1975. Merill recorded the first released version, though the one that everyone is familiar with is the Joan Jett version. In 1982, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts came out with their version.
