Boston Celtics (1964-65) | Record 62-18

The Boston Celtics are the best NBA team ever, and their era of dominance in the 1960s is partly responsible for this. No team was more representative of greatness in the 1964-65 NBA season than the Boston Celtics.

The Celtics finished the regular season with a 62-18 record, the best in the league and the best in the franchise’s history. The team was led by legendary centre Bill Russell, shooting guard Sam Jones, and a young John Havlicek.

The Celtics’ regular-season success carried over to the postseason, where they defeated the Philadelphia 76ers in the Eastern Division Finals and the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals. The team’s consistency over the years is why they rank high on this list. 

Chicago bulls(1991-92) | Record 67-15

Under coach Phil Jackson, the Bulls won 67 games in 1991–1992, right after capturing the franchise’s first championship the year before. But what’s more impressive is the Bulls’ excellent teamwork.

Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen combined for 51.1 points per game, but they embraced the triangle style and attempted to spread the ball around. Additionally, each team member knew what to do and their role.

The Chicago Bulls were off to a great start by sweeping the Miami Heat in the first round and competing against the New York Knicks in one of the greatest playoff series in NBA history in the second round. They beat the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Conference finals and delivered a defeat to the Portland Trail Blazers in the 1992 NBA finals. Simply put, the Chicago Bulls showed their dominance in the season. Their work as a unit gives them an edge and a place on this list. 

Philadelphia 76ers (1982-83) | Record 65-17

In the 1982–83 NBA season, Julius Erving was 32 years old, in the twilight of his career, and still without a championship. But in 1983, he finally reached that mountain peak when he and his team, the Philadelphia 76ers, won the most coveted title of all in the NBA.  

While Erving was a key cog in the team’s success, he wasn’t the only one. Point guard Maurice Cheeks passed the ball around, guard Andrew Toney gave great offence, and Moses Malone was a defensive force to be reckoned with. 

The 76ers’ dangerous lineup dispatched the New York Knicks in four games and the Milwaukee Bucks in five, respectively, in the playoffs. The club defeated the Los Angeles Lakers in four straight games, led by Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. It may have felt like something magical was in the air during their season, but the truth is they realised what was on the line and rose to the occasion.

Los Angeles Lakers (1971-72) | Record 69-13

By looking at their roster, it’s easy to see why the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers were so successful. The Lakers could share the ball well despite having such dynamic scorers as Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, Happy Hairston, and Gail Goodrich. 

Because of this, the team could easily defeat their opponents and set a record for consecutive victories with 33 in a row from November to January. The Lakers finished with a league-best 69 wins and won the NBA championship series against the New York Knicks.

They did it again in the 1986–87 season, trying single-mindedly to reclaim their spot as the greatest basketball team after a cringeworthy previous season. The Lakers breezed into the NBA Finals, meeting the defending champion Boston Celtics, winning a remarkable six-game series and prevailing once again as NBA champions.

Golden State Warriors (2015-16) | Record 73-9

The Chicago Bulls’ 1996 record of 72-10 seemed like it was cast in stone, and no other team would beat their magnificent feat. Twenty years later, the unbelievable happened, and the Golden State Warriors made history as the team with the highest NBA record of all time, finishing the season at 73-9. 

The Warriors haven’t had such an outstanding season since, but that doesn’t mean their star shined less. For the excellent performance by the Golden State Warriors, coach Steve Kerr was named Coach of the Year.

Some players also got recognition, and Draymond Green and Klay Thompson were chosen as All-Star players. However, the player who joined the history books from the Golden State Warriors was Steph Curry. In the season, he became the first player to be unanimously voted as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the season by the whole panel. Not only that, but Curry also broke the record for the highest number of three-pointers made in a season. 

With such a spectacular season for the Golden State Warriors, it will take a lot of work for another team to top this major achievement.
