With the 2022 FIFA World Cup finally kicking off, all eyes will be on Qatar as it becomes the first Middle Eastern country to host the planet’s biggest sporting event. As the international competition only takes place every four years, the billions of football fans around the globe are always excited to see how their country fares, if they are fortunate enough to live in one of the 32 nations that have qualified to participate.
This edition will be different from any other previous World Cup’s though, and not just because it’s located in the Middle East. The tournament usually occurs in the Northern Hemisphere’s summer, so it would kick-off in June, but because of Qatar’s extremely high temperatures during that period, it has been moved until now. This means that this World Cup is actually taking place whilst many top football leagues would normally be competing, forcing them to have to postpone until after its completion on 18th December.
With the Premier League now being on pause until 26th December, the many supporters of teams in the English top division will instead be fully focussed on the World Cup. As the league is stacked full of incredible talent, there will be an immense number of players from its 20 clubs competing in Qatar for their national sides. In fact, the Premier League is way out on top for the most players at the tournament, a massive 136 in total.
So, let’s take a look at which Premier League sides have the greatest number of players at World Cup 2022.
Chelsea (12)
The London club Chelsea, get the bronze medal for most players at the tournament, with 12 of their squad making the journey to Qatar. Some of the most notable include winger Hakim Ziyech, who will be unleashing his lethal left-foot for Morroco, the silky German forward Kai Havertz, the attacking-midfielder Christian Pulisic, who’s the true poster boy and captain of the American team, and the veteran defender Thiago Silva, who will be lining up for Brazil in what will almost certainly be his last World Cup.
When it comes to players that will make up the English side, they will provide the energetic young midfielder Conor Gallagher, as well as the tenacious midfielder Mason Mount, who is a real fan- favourite at Stamford Bridge. They would’ve supplied a couple more defenders, but unfortunately the wing-backs Reece James and Ben Chillwell both got injured. This ruled them out of being included in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad, which you can see in full here at MarkMeets.
Manchester United (14)
Manchester United might just be the most famous football club in the whole world, so it makes sense for them to have a large number of players in Qatar. They have 14 players in total who will be running out for their nation, with the most well-known being Cristiano Ronaldo, starring in his 5th World Cup for Portugal. Despite his remarkable career now being in its twilight, the forward will still be going all out to finally be able to lift the trophy.
Another of their players who is hoping to impress at the tournament is the Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen. With him pulling the strings in the centre of the pitch, Denmark could be one of the true dark horses of the competition. They’re currently priced at the seemingly generous odds of 33/1 to win the whole thing, despite seriously impressing at Euro 2020.
If you want to have a flutter on the World Cup, then you should get over to SBO, as they have all the top online bookmakers that are covering the tournament, as well as many other sporting events. They’ve put the hours into researching which online betting sites have the most to offer, and they review them all so visitors can find a bookmaker that grants them everything they need. That includes the most generous odds, and even many free bets.
Manchester City (16)
It’s the blue side of Manchester that comes in at the top spot, with a whopping 16 of their players being at the World Cup. As Manchester City are one of the richest clubs in football, they’ve been able to acquire a squad full of international quality, so it shouldn’t be too astounding to learn that they’re the Premier League team with the most players at the tournament.
This will rather remarkably include 5 England players; the right-back Kyle Walker, the defender John Stones, the winger Jack Grealish, the defensive midfielder Kalvin Phillips, and the midfielder Phil Foden. All of them are expected to see some action out on the pitch.
