Rick and Morty are not only coming back with a sixth season (whenever a release date gets announced for it!), we’ll let you know, but the grandfather-grandson duo also have a new spin-off in the works – with a different type of animation.
Rick and Morty: The Anime will air on Adult Swim and stream on HBO Max in the US.
The new show will consist of 10 episodes, to be directed by Tower of God director Takashi Sano. It will serve as a standalone series, but still adapt themes and events from the main tv show.
Sano directed two of Rick and Morty‘s previous anime shorts, ‘Rick and Morty vs. Genocider’ and ‘Summer Meets God (Rick Meets Evil)’. These clocked up over 10 million combined views on Adult Swim’s digital platforms, so it’s no surprise a full series is on the way.
“The multiverse-straddling exploits of Rick and the gang pose challenges to the family bond, but they always rise to the occasion,” Sano said in a statement.

“It’s such a life affirming sight, and Jerry is no exception. I am honoured to have been given an opportunity to tell a new story about this amazing family. I hope you enjoy their adventures!”

The animation behind the series will be put together by Telecom Animation Film, the studio which produced Sano’s previous shorts.
Rick and Morty: The Anime is yet to receive an air date.
It was also announced recently that Rick and Morty will be featuring in the upcoming video game MultiVersus, alongside a star-studded cast from Warner Bros properties including Game of Thrones‘ Arya Stark, Batman, Bugs Bunny and Scooby-Doo‘s Shaggy.
Rick and Morty airs on Adult Swim in the US, and on E4 and All 4 in the UK.
