What is the UK’s Favourite TV Show?

It’s been made official by a recent survey carried out to celebrate World Television Day on the 21st of December exactly what people’s favourite TV show is.

The huge survey conducted by Best Offers Bingo asked almost 2000 people what their favourite show was. Take a look at the top responses below!

Friends (1994 – 2004) – 411 votes
The perfect example of city life in your twenties, Friends ran for ten years and conveniently ten seasons. It’s fair to say that this captivating group of New Yorkers were easy to identify with and everyone had a favourite character. Friends managed to retain relatively consistent viewing figures throughout its time on TV, and many people are still clearly attached to the gang even if they are no longer visiting Central Perk.

The Simpsons (1989 – ) – 347 votes
Another show that people arguably grew up watching, many people are now closer to Homer’s age than Bart’s if they were a youthful viewer in 1989, but this show has remained popular. The antics of this suburban American family in the town of Springfield have had a consistently shrinking audience, but many people are still dedicated to The Simpsons and classic episodes are still widely discussed online.

Game of Thrones (2011 – ) – 335 votes
This action packed fantasy drama has got more popular with every season, in fact its latest season finale was the most popular so far. Filled with epic battle scenes and complex storylines revolving around detailed dialogue, Game of Thrones has captivated audiences with numerous plot twists and countless killings, leading to the development of tons of fan theories.

Downton Abbey (2010 – ) – 314 votes
The only British show that made the top 10 list, Downton Abbey is a historical drama that is loved by many and consistently attracts large audiences and lots of press coverage. This dramatic show has evoked nostalgia with many and has a dedicated selection of fans.

Breaking Bad (2008 – 2013) – 246 votes
While the conclusion of Breaking Bad divided opinion the show is still gaining fans to add to the already massive following it has. The show has gained a reputation as one of the best of all time, and it’s hard to go to any city without seeing some form of Heisenberg merchandise. It has even resulted in the creation of prequel series Better Call Saul.

The X-Files (1993 – 2002) – 192 votes
Showing just how popular a blend of science fiction and horror can be The X-Files is loved by many and has arguably inspired countless other shows such as Lost, Supernatural, and Dark Skies.

Star Trek (1966 – 1969) – 177 votes
Another sci-fi classic, Star Trek was many people’s first taste of science fiction. With crazy adventures exploring numerous planets it still inspires hundreds to attend conventions dedicated to the show.

M*A*S*H (1972 – 1983) – 166 votes
Being the most viewed television event in history is no mean feat, but it was achieved by M*A*S*H when it aired its final ever episode, and was the most viewed TV event until 2010 when it was overtaken by the Super Bowl.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997 – 2003) – 123 votes
This cult series has a dedicated following, undoubtedly in part due to its creator Joss Whedon and his subsequent successful career.

The Sopranos (1999 – 2007) – 110 votes
The final show on the favourite TV shows list is The Sopranos which paved the way for other anti-hero-centric crime dramas such as Breaking Bad.

These results definitely indicate how older shows can retain their popularity and programmes that have a longer run appear to make a greater impact. It will certainly be interesting to see how this list will look by next year’s World Television Day.
