Interview with Louis Tomlinson: A Reflection on Career and Growth

From his early days in One Direction to his flourishing solo career, Louis has captivated audiences worldwide with his talent and genuine connection. His journey is a testament to perseverance, artistic growth, and staying true to one’s musical vision.

Soon Louis Tomlinson-curated festival heads to Mexico. The singer’s Away From Home Festival debuts in Latin America in June following editions in the UK, Spain and Italy. The One Direction singer will star in and curate the brand’s fourth edition, which he launched in the UK in 2021 holding a free event at Crystal Palace Park, London back in 2021.

At 32, Louis Tomlinson has the experience of being part of one of the biggest pop phenomena of the last 14 years, with record sales and sold-out shows in stadiums all over the world. And now he’s repeating the frenzy solo, just like his former bandmate Harry Styles did a little while ago.

“I’ve been thinking about getting older and all that kind of thing”. From comparing himself to his One Direction bandmates for a long time (comparing his solo music success to his One Direction bandmates’ achievements). However since the birth of his son Freddie, Louis Tomlinson has matured and no longer feels like he’s in competition with Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, all 30, and Zayn Malik, 31.

Louis Tomlinson already has two solo albums and is currently touring the world presenting his latest one, “Faith in the Future.” It was released in November 2022 and surprised with a more rock-oriented sound, close to the Brit-pop of his beloved Oasis, and less pop. It reached number one in the UK and produced three singles, “Bigger Than Me,” “Out of My System,” and “Silver Tongues.”

During an interview, Louis expressed his intention to “provide a platform for emerging artists” through his touring and in a no-holds barred interview talks about his time on the road to new music. His openness suggests a genuine desire to be at peace and to further support and nurture the careers of up-and-coming musicians, besides his son.

Louis’ extensive experience in the music industry as a performer and songwriter could provide valuable insights into future work with other industry professionals although he admits he “needed to succeed on my own”.

“I do feel in a much, much different place now. And it’s a nicer thing to feel, it’s not always the nicest feeling to feel so competitive.” He addessed the ‘romance’ between him and Harry Styles – nicknamed Larry – is a “conspiracy” that “irritates him” saying there is nothing he can do to stop it”.

Now, you’ve had such an incredible journey in the music industry, from One Direction to your flourishing solo career. Looking back, what are some of the biggest moments that stand out to you?

That’s a tough one! There are so many. One Direction winning their first award show, the incredible stadium tours, and the memories we made with the fans were truly special. On a personal level, releasing my own solo music and seeing it connect with people in such a meaningful way is something I’ll never take for granted. Songs like “Story of My Life” seem like nostalgia, and it’s a really nice one to sing.

Your debut album, “Walls,” was a powerful and introspective piece of work. Where did you draw inspiration from for your recent album, “Faith in the Future”?

“Faith in the Future” definitely feels like a natural progression from “Walls.” It’s still personal, but I also wanted to explore themes of hope and resilience. I drew inspiration from my experiences, the people around me, and the world we’re living in.

The title itself, “Faith in the Future,” carries a lot of weight. What message do you hope to convey with the album?

I just want to encourage people to believe in themselves and have faith that things can improve, even when things seem difficult. We all face challenges, but it’s important to maintain optimism and keep striving for a brighter future.

That’s a beautiful message. The album also showcases your growth as a musician, incorporating new sounds and textures. Did you have any specific influences or inspirations for the sonic direction?

I definitely explored different styles on this album, collaborating with a variety of talented producers and songwriters. Throughout the process, I was inspired by artists like The 1975, Bruce Springsteen, and some classic rock influences like Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers.

You’ve mentioned the importance of collaboration. What’s your favorite aspect of working with other creatives on music?

It’s incredibly rewarding to learn from other people’s perspectives and share ideas. Collaboration allows all of us to push our boundaries and create something truly unique. It’s a beautiful exchange of energy and creativity.

Speaking of collaboration, you recently toured with a diverse range of artists as support acts. What was your experience like, sharing the stage with such different musical styles?

It was fantastic! I learned so much from each artist, and it created a really exciting and dynamic environment for the audience. It was important to me to provide a platform for emerging artists alongside established ones, and the experience has been incredibly inspiring.

Looking ahead, what are some of your aspirations or goals for the future, both personally and professionally?

On a personal level, I’m simply focused on continuing to grow and learn as a person. I definitely feel in a good place right now. Professionally, I’m excited to explore new creative avenues, both musically and perhaps even in other areas. I’m always looking for ways to challenge myself and push my boundaries.

I feel very, very proud of myself and my fans.
