Olivier Awards 2022 nominations announced

The Society of London Theatre has announced the nominations for its 2022 Olivier Awards.

The nominations were announced today, 8 March, on YouTube by last year’s winners, Miriam-Teak Lee (&Juliet) and Sam Tutty (Dear Evan Hansen). Watch them announce the nominees here.

Britains’s most important theatre awards, the winners of the Olivier Awards will be revealed at a ceremony at London’s Royal Albert Hall on 10 April 2022.

The awards will be hosted by Jason Manford, and audiences at home will be able to watch highlights of the awards on ITV, and listen to the awards live on Magic Radio. Also see what we know so far about the Olivier Awards 2022.

This year’s awards are based on shows that opened between 19 February 2020 and 22 February 2022.

Cabaret, Life of Pi and Anything Goes are the big winners of the nominations, with a total of 28 nominations for these 3 shows. Moulin Rouge! The Musical, Back to the Future The Musical and The Normal Heart also do well.

Cabaret at the Playhouse Theatre / Kit Kat Club has swept the board, with 11 nominations, the most for any show this year. Eddie Redmayne and Jessie Buckley are both up for leading actor awards, also director Rebecca Frecknall, supporting actors Liza Sadovy and Elliot Levey, and for Best Musical Revival.

Life Of Pi at the Wyndham’s Theatre, Lolita Chakrabarti’s stage adaptation of the bestselling novel, leads the plays, with nine nominations, including Best Actor for Hiran Abeysekera, and Best Supporting Actor for the seven performers who play ‘Richard Parker’, the puppet tiger – Fred Davis, Daisy Franks, Romina Hytten, Tom Larkin, Habib Nasib Nader, Tom Stacy and Scarlet Wilderink.

Anything Goes, the Cole Porter musical which returns to the Barbican Theatre this summer, also grabbed nine nominations including Best Musical Revival, Broadway star Sutton Foster is nominated for Best Actress in a Musical, alongside Robert Lindsay, Carly Mercedes Dyer and Gary Wilmot in supporting categories, and nods for directing, choreography, orchestrations and costume design.

Back To The Future – The Musical at the Adelphi Theatre scored seven nominations, including Best New Musical, Best Original Score or New Orchestrations for Grammy-winning composers Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard and orchestrators Ethan Popp and Bryan Crook. Olly Dobson is nominated for Best Actor in a Musical for his role as Marty McFly, with Hugh Coles (George McFly) up for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical at the Piccadilly Theatre and Larry Kramer’s play The Normal Heart at the National Theatre both received five nominations each; and Disney’s Frozen The Musical is nominated for four Olivier Awards, with Stephanie McKeon up for Best Actress in a Musical for her role as Anna.

Also with four nominations are Get Up, Stand Up! The Bob Marley Musical at the Lyric Theatre, and Michael Longhurst’s star-studded Donmar Warehouse production of Nick Payne’s Constellations, with Omari Douglas and Sheila Atim nominated.

Surprises in this year’s list include Andrew Lloyd Webber’s new production of Cinderella at the Gillian Lynne Theatre, which only managed one nomination, for Victoria Hamilton-Barritt. Neither Samantha Barks in Frozen The Musical or Carrie Hope Fletcher in Cinderella were nominated. Also the National Theatre only received nominations for one production – The Normal Heart; and the Royal Court failed to receive any. Spring Awakening at the Almeida Theatre is nominated for Best Musical Revival, but none of the talented young cast or the creatives were nominated.
